Stephen Poling, a visual artist living in Saint Paul, MN, paints his experience intuitively and expressively. In his work he asks the question “How to give form to the formless, the substance that is the essence of everything?” This question has been the force underlying and informing his work since he began painting in 1980. Even before he knew that this was what he was doing this was his unconscious motivation for painting. When asked, he said, “I’m not painting what you see, I’m painting what you don’t see”.   

My paintings are sensual, they’re about feeling and emotion, deeper than the mind, infinite subjectivity, like poetry. They’re an experience that cuts through the mind created chaos - they’re felt and not “understood”.
